The hunting season is now in full swing and despite the most challenging conditions, we are still sending home happy clients.

Our rains came late this year and then they didn`t stop!! Its been the first time ever that water has still been running out the ponds in June. In addition to all the water, the grass remained green and is still green under the trees! This made it very difficult to draw game to the blinds.....and we are meant to be a semi desert area!! We can take some comfort in the fact that most of the SA bushveld had the same conditions, some even worse than ours, but that is how hunting goes. Sometimes the animals have to win and then the trophy quality improves for the years ahead.

At the same time that we have been hunting, South Africa has hosted the most amazing soccer world cup. I think the event has renewed the faith of many in the future of our country. There was such a festive spirit in the country as blacks and whites took hands to showcase what we have. I think we impressed the world! The world cup did effect travel for hunters and most outfitters in SA complained about a slowdown due to the soccer.

In the meantime, the family is well settled in Port Alfred and our house is under construction. All very exciting except for the financial implications and stresses (will try keep trophy fees down though). The boys had long school hloidays so we were all on Melorani for June and the first week of July but are back at school again. I now fly up and down for the hunting and also for the end of season game capture.

Melorani continues to produce some top quality trophies every year despite continued hunting every year. This is a result of conservative offtakes on the hunting side. It is no surprise then that we have won the Professional Hunters Association "trophy of the year" on 2 occaisions and last year also won the new bowhunter award for most outstanding trophy with a bow.
